Each platform has its pros and cons, and depending on how you want to work when on the go, one may prove significantly better than another. Here’s a look at some of the things to consider and ask your wireless retailer about if you’re looking to get a smartphone or get your whole team connected:

Operating System

Just like computers can be either PC or Mac, smartphones run any of a half dozen popular operating systems: iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Android, Palm, and Symbian. And just like your computer, the OS you choose will be the most important decision in terms of determining what your mobile experience will be like for the next two or more years (the likely length of your contract).

Some general characterizations about each: iPhone has the most apps and perhaps the most compelling interface. BlackBerry is superior for power email users. Windows Mobile works the most seamlessly with Microsoft Office. Palm offers an intuitive way to use multiple applications simultaneously. Android, though relatively new, may ultimately offer the largest selection of devices. Symbian is the most popular internationally.

If you work in a multiuser computing environment, and you have full (administrator level) access to your computer, you might want to restrict unauthorized access to your "sensitive" files under Windows 95/98.
One way is to disable the Cancel button in the Logon dialog box.
Just run Regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Network/Logon
Create the "Logon" subkey if it is not present on your machine: highlight the Network key -> right-click in the left hand Regedit pane -> select New -> Key -> name it "Logon" (no quotes) -> press Enter. Then add/modify a DWORD value and call it "MustBeValidated" (don't type the quotes). Double-click it, check the Decimal box and type 1 for value.
Now click the Start button -> Shut Down (Log off UserName) -> Log on as a different user, and you'll notice that the Logon Cancel button has been disabled.

The Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP Professional will automatically provide all of the network settings you need to share one Internet connection with all the computers in your network. Each computer can use programs such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express as if they were directly connected to the Internet.
You should not use this feature in an existing network with Windows 2000 Server domain controllers, DNS servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or systems configured for static IP addresses.

Enabling ICS

The ICS host computer needs two network connections. The local area network connection, automatically created by installing a network adapter, connects to the computers on your home or small office network. The other connection, using a 56k modem, ISDN, DSL, or cable modem, connects the home or small office network to the Internet. You need to ensure that ICS is enabled on the connection that has the Internet connection. By doing this, the shared connection can connect your home or small office network to the Internet, and users outside your network are not at risk of receiving inappropriate addresses from your network.
When you enable ICS, the local area network connection to the home or small office network is given a new static IP address and configuration. Consequently, TCP/IP connections established between any home or small office computer and the ICS host computer at the time of enabling ICS are lost and need to be reestablished. For example, if Internet Explorer is connecting to a Web site when Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, refresh the browser to reestablish the connection. You must configure client machines on your home or small office network so TCP/IP on the local area connection obtains an IP address automatically. Home or small office network users must also configure Internet options for Internet Connection Sharing. To enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Discovery and Control on Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition computers, run the Network Setup Wizard from the CD or floppy disk on these computers. For ICS Discovery and Control to work on Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition computers, Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later must be installed.

To enable Internet Connection Sharing on a network connection

You must be logged on to your computer with an owner account in order to complete this procedure.
Open Network Connections. (Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double–click Network Connections.)
Click the dial–up, local area network, PPPoE, or VPN connection you want to share, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.
If you want this connection to dial automatically when another computer on your home or small office network attempts to access external resources, select the Establish a dial–up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet check box.
If you want other network users to enable or disable the shared Internet connection, select the Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection check box.
Under Internet Connection Sharing, in Home networking connection, select any adapter that connects the computer sharing its Internet connection to the other computers on your network. The Home networking connection is only present when two or more network adapters are installed on the computer.

To configure Internet options on your client computers for Internet Connection Sharing

Open Internet Explorer. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Internet Explorer.)
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click Never dial a connection, and then click LAN Settings.

In Automatic configuration, clear the Automatically detect settings and Use automatic configuration script check boxes.
In Proxy Server, clear the Use a proxy server check box.

Speed up your browsing of Windows 2000 & XP machines

Here's a great tip to speed up your browsing of Windows XP machines. Its actually a fix to a bug installed as default in Windows 2000 that scans shared files for Scheduled Tasks. And it turns out that you can experience a delay as long as 30 seconds when you try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is using the extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks. Note that though the fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 users will experience that the actual browsing speed of both the Internet & Windows Explorers improve significantly after applying it since it doesn't search for Scheduled Tasks anymore. Here's how :

Open up the Registry and go to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

Under that branch, select the key :

{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

and delete it.

This is key that instructs Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. If you like you may want to export the exact branch so that you can restore the key if necessary.

This fix is so effective that it doesn't require a reboot and you can almost immediately determine yourself how much it speeds up your browsing processes.

This guide describes how to upgrade a Microsoft Microsoft Windows 98-based, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition-based client that has user profiles to a Microsoft Windows XP-based client.

The following steps enable the Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Me) profiles to be retained throughout the process.

Your best method to retain the profiles is to join the domain during the upgrade installation process.
Otherwise, you must use a workaround method to transfer the profile information over to the Windows XP profile.

During the upgrade installation process, at the networking section, the administrator is offered the choice to join a domain or a workgroup.
If you join the domain at this juncture, you ensure that all the existing profiles are migrated successfully to the Windows XP-based installation.

If you did not join the computer to the domain during the upgrade process, you must use the following workaround method:

Join the upgraded computer to the target domain.

All applicable users must log on and log off (which generates a profile).

Copy the appropriate Application Data folder from the Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me profiles to the newly created user profiles.

Theoretically, you can get rid of it (as well as a few other things). Windows 2000 power users should already be familiar with this tweak.

Fire up the Windows Explorer and navigate your way to the %SYSTEMROOT% \ INF folder. What the heck is that thingy with the percentage signs? It's a variable. For most people, %SYSTEMROOT% is C:\Windows. For others, it may be E:\WinXP. Get it? Okay, on with the hack! In the INF folder, open sysoc.inf (but not before making a BACKUP copy first). Before your eyes glaze over, look for the line containing "msmsgs" in it. Near the end of that particular line, you'll notice that the word "hide" is not so hidden. Go ahead and delete "hide" (so that the flanking commas are left sitting next to one another). Save the file and close it. Now, open the Add and Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. Click the Add / Remove Windows Components icon. You should see "Windows Messenger" in that list. Remove the checkmark from its box, and you should be set. NOTE: there are other hidden system components in that sysoc.inf file, too. Remove "hide" and the subsequent programs at your own risk.

A TV station in Alabama is learning that live Twitter billboards sometimes deliver unintended consequences.
While we can’t vouch for its authenticity, South Carolina-based blog The Palmetto Scoop claims a University of South Carolina graduate driving through Mobile, Alabama snapped the shot below and sent it in.
The WPMI-TV billboard displays Tweets from the LOCAL15NEWS Twitter account, with this Tweet resulting in the juxtaposition.
Update: The photo has been confirmed as real and WPMI-TV’s general manager and news director were suspended over the incident, reports Rob Holbert.

As we mentioned in our preview earlier this week, new features include support for Twitter Lists, the new Twitter retweets feature and geolocation. The new version is free to existing Tweetie 2 users.

10 Firefox Extensions Google Chrome Should Have Too

Extensions are coming to Google Chrome in the near future. The current developer build supports them, and there’s a lot to be excited about in the implementation -, you don’t have to restart the browser to use an extension you’ve just installed like you do in Firefox, for example.

On the other hand, the group of brave folks using the developer build don’t have nearly as many extensions to pick from yet. Firefox has the best lineup in the browser biz, so let’s play a wishing game; here are some Firefox extensions we’d love to see pop up in Chrome’s gallery, too. Some of our favorites are already in the works, but we haven’t yet heard a peep about any of the ones on this list.

If you’ve already thought of at least one plugin without which you just can’t make the switch from Firefox to Chrome, feel free to add to our list in the comments.

1. Tree Style Tabs

The proponents of Tree Style Tabs are not the majority, but they make two excellent points. Their extension of choice sorts tabs vertically along the left side of the website you’re viewing instead of at the top of the browser. This makes more efficient use of screen real estate on widescreen displays — which means most displays nowadays.

Even more notably, Tree Style Tabs displays your tabs in a tree (Surprise!), with each tab appearing one level beneath the tab from which you opened it. If you have 50 tabs going, that visual certainly makes them easier to manage.

2. IE Tab

There are some web applications that still only work properly and with all features intact in Internet Explorer — Microsoft Sharepoint, for example. Firefox’s IE Tab extension opens a native IE tab within the Firefox interface. It looks like any other Firefox tab for the most part, but under the hood it’s all IE. This feature is supported in the spinoff browser ChromePlus, but the original still lacks it. The extension is also great for developers who want to test sites cross browser without actually having to open two separate browsers.

Hey, while you’re at it, can we have a Firefox Tab too?

3. TwitterBar

It’s neat that Chrome will do Google searches from its address bar, but with Firefox’s TwitterBar you can type and send tweets there too. Jumping over to TweetDeck or your Twitter.com tab would use up two or three more clicks or key presses. You’ll hear no complaints here if you accidentally tweet “http://www.mashable.com” but be warned that it’s a possibility with this extension installed.

4. ScribeFire

You can use ScribeFire to write blog posts and publish them to WordPress, Movable Type, and a number of other platforms without browsing away from the site you’re blogging about. It pops up at the bottom of your Firefox window, and you can drag items from the site in front of you to the body of your post.

Chrome’s speed and stability make it attractive to bloggers, so ScribeFire or something like it would be right at home.

5. StumbleUpon

Delicious was among the first extensions to make its way to Chrome, and we like it, but we’re still hoping for an easy StumbleUpon solution to add to our social bookmarking options. Admittedly, there is a functional web-based workaround out there for Chrome, but it demands some URL tweaking, so it doesn’t match the Firefox extension’s ease of use by a longshot. That’s why we want a legit Chrome extension.

6. FaviconizeTab

This extension adds an option to reduce tabs to the size of a favicon (the tiny website icons seen in the address bar), removing the accompanying title text. It’s useful in the eternal battle to keep as many tabs visible as possible. You probably don’t need all that text; for example, Twitter and Facebook tabs should be recognizable by their iconic (pun only sort of intended) lower-case “t” and “f” logos, respectively. Chrome’s tabs are already more conservative with pixels than Firefox’s tabs are, but every little bit helps.

7. AutoCopy

AutoCopy sends text to the clipboard as soon as you select it, no keyboard shortcut necessary. You’ll never need to hit Control or Command + C to copy text, and if you have an application like CopyPaste Pro you can recover any clipboard items you might accidentally replace.

Many Linux distributions with out-of-the-now-proverbial-box clipboard history functionality ditched Control + C ages ago, and so have many Firefox users thanks to this extension. Chrome should be next.

8. LeechBlock

Never let it be said that Chrome users are not as productive as Firefox users. LeechBlock helps you manage your time with up to six groups of websites by blocking them when you know you shouldn’t be visiting them. You can limit your time with each group to specific hours of the day — like only being able to visit Facebook after you clock out of work at 5:00 PM — or you can tell the plugin to only let you access certain sites for so many minutes out of each hour.

9. Taboo

The self-described cure for “tabitis,” Taboo adds a button to save tabs for later (scrollbar location, form data, and all) instead of leaving them open to eat up memory and clutter the top of your browser. It also takes a snapshot of each saved tab so you can browse thumbnails when you’re ready to revisit the stuff you didn’t have the time to finish before. The usefulness of this extension is platform-agnostic, so the extension should be too. Let’s hope we see a Chrome clone soon.

10. Stylish

Google has run ads promoting Chrome’s many aesthetic themes, but with Stylish you can re-theme not just your browser but each website you visit.

It’s similar in principle to Greasemonkey; you download geek-made tweaks to the CSS of existing websites, and the plugin interprets those tweaks and displays the sites differently as a result.

How to Change the Logon Screen on Windows 7

Be it screensavers, desktop wallpapers or font type and sizes, visual customization at the OS level is usually important to all kinds of users. Recognizing this, Microsoft has made it easier than ever to apply and adjust individual themes with Windows 7. We looked at this last week showing you how to find hidden themes buried in your hard drive as well as sponsored ones available through Microsoft's online Personalization Gallery.
This time around, we are going to show you how to customize the Windows 7 login screen. There are various methods to accomplish this, with and without third-party software. I understand many people might not want to rely on a third-party application, while others would appreciate a quicker, safer route. First up is the more hands-on approach, and then the utility.

Hands-on approach

This method will require you to modify the registry, and if that puts a knot in your stomach, you should move on to the next section.
Step 1: Open the Windows Start menu and enter regedit into the search bar.
Step 2: Right click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and select Find.
Step 3: Search for OEMBackground, which should be in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background. If the key does not exist, add a new DWORD value with the name OEMBackground.
Step 4: Double click on the entry OEMBackground, and change the value from 0 to 1.

Step 5: Open Windows Explorer and go to the following path: %windir%\system32\oobe.
Step 6: Create a new folder named info, and open it.
Step 7: Create a new folder within info named backgrounds.
Step 8: Rename your desired wallpaper as backgroundDefault.jpg and place it inside the folder backgrounds (images must be less than 245KB in size).

That should do the trick, now just lock your PC, log off or reboot and enjoy.

Third-party software

If you are uncomfortable with manually tinkering with the registry -- or simply have better things to be doing with your time -- we understand. Various third-party applications can change Windows 7's default logon wallpaper, but our personal favorite is Tweak.com's Logon Changer.
The software is ridiculously easy to use, doesn't require installation, and it even has built-in tools to automatically resize and recompress your images while leaving the original file untouched. The Logon Changer also lets you quickly change your logon wallpaper back to the Windows 7 default.

Start by downloading the app here, and then unzip the executable. Run the program and it should present you with a preview of your logon screen along with a few self-explanatory options: "Change Logon Screen" lets you browse to a new image, "Test" will bring up your logon screen, "Revert to Default Logon Screen" reapplies Windows 7's original wallpaper.

Google account security tips

As part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, we recently posted about how to pick a smart password. Having a strong password goes a long way in helping to protect your data, but there are a number of additional steps you can take to help you keep your Gmail account secure:

1. Remember to sign out. Especially when using a public computer, be careful to sign out of your Google account when you're finished. Just click the "Sign out" link at the top right corner of your inbox. If you're using a public or shared computer and want to be extra thorough, you can also clear the browser's cache, cookies and history. Then, completely close the browser. On your personal computer, you can also lock your computer with a password-protected screensaver if you need to step away momentarily. Learn the best ways to lock your screen in Windows or in Mac OS X. Forgot to sign out? Open up a new Gmail session on another computer and use Gmail's remote sign out feature to close any sessions that might still be open elsewhere.

2. Be careful about sending certain sensitive information via email. Once you send an email, you're no longer in control of the information it contains. The recipients, if they so choose, could forward the email or post its contents in a public place. Even if you know and trust the people you're emailing, that information may become exposed if their accounts become compromised or they get a virus on their machines. As a rule of thumb, should you need to provide a credit card number or financial account number to respond to a message, provide it over the phone or in person — not over email. And never share your password with anyone. Google does not email you to ask you for your password, your social security number, or other personal information — so don't send it!

3. Enable "Always use HTTPS." Any time you visit a webpage, your computer needs to send and receive information across the Internet. HTTPS is used to encrypt data as it is transmitted between computers on the Internet, so look for the "https" in the URL bar of your browser to indicate that the connection between your computer and Gmail's servers is encrypted. We use HTTPS on the Gmail login page, and you can choose to protect your entire Gmail session with HTTPS as well. HTTPS can make your mail slower, so we let you make the choice for yourself. Open Settings and choose "Always use HTTPS" on the General tab if you want to turn it on.

4. Be wary of unexpected attachments.To help protect you from viruses and malware, Gmail automatically scans every attachment when it's delivered to you, and again each time you open a message. Attachments you send are also scanned. That said, no system is foolproof, so if you happen to get an email from a friend with an attachment you didn't expect, don't be afraid to ask the sender what it is before you decide whether to open it.

5. Make sure your account recovery information is up-to-date. Your account recovery information helps you regain access to your account if you ever forget your password, or if someone gains access to your account without your permission. We currently offer several paths to account recovery. Every Gmail user must select a security question and answer — be sure to choose a combination that is easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess or come across by investigating. Don't choose a question like "What is my favorite color?" as others may easily guess the answer. We also encourage you to provide a secondary email address and/or a mobile phone number, so we can send you a link to reset your password if you lose access to your account.

The Registry

DEFINITION: The Windows 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP Registry is a complex, unified, system wide, continually referenced during operation database, used for centrally storing, locating, editing and administering system, hardware, software and user configuration information, following a hierarchical structure.

It was introduced to replace the text/ASCII based MS -DOS configuration (.BAT, .SYS) and MS Windows initialization (.INI) files.

Structure of Registry in windows 9X is Different from that of Windows NT,2000 and XP.

Windows 95/98/ME :In these operating systems Registry is stored in these 5 files, with the Hidden, Read-only attributes for write-protection purposes, usually located in the %WinDir% folder (default is C:\Windows) .

SYSTEM.DAT = stores persistent hardware and software settings related to the system it resides on, contained in the (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT = Windows 95 and 98 only) and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Hive keys.
USER.DAT = stores user specific and software settings contained in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER Hive key. If more than one user, then multiple user profiles enable each user to have their own separate USER.DAT file, located in %WinDir%\Profiles\%UserName%. When a user logs on, Windows OS (down)loads both USER.DAT files: the one from the local machine %WinDir% (global user settings), and the most recent one from the local machine %WinDir%\Profiles\%UserName%, or from the central (host) server if user profiles reside on a network (local user settings).

Editing Registry

Always make sure that you know what you are doing when changing the registry or else just one little mistake can crash the whole system. That's why it's always good to back it up!

Registry Structure

For ease of use, the Registry is divided into five separate structures that represent the Registry database in its entirety. These five groups are known as Keys, and are discussed below:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
This registry key contains the configuration information for the user that is currently logged in. The users folders, screen colors, and control panel settings are stored here. This information is known as a User Profile.

HKEY_USERS
In windowsNT 3.5x, user profiles were stored locally (by default) in the systemroot\system32\config directory. In NT4.0, they are stored in the systemroot\profiles directory. User-Specific information is kept there, as well as common, system wide user information.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
This key contains configuration information particular to the computer. This information is stored in the systemroot\system32\config directory as persistent operating system files, with the exception of the volatile hardware key.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
The information stored here is used to open the correct application when a file is opened by using Explorer and for Object Linking and Embedding. It is actually a window that reflects information from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software subkey.

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
The information contained in this key is to configure settings such as the software and device drivers to load or the display resolution to use. This key has a software and system subkeys, which keep track of configuration information.

REG Files

.REG file, which can be in:

plain text/ASCII format in Windows 95/98/ME and NT/2000/XP or
binary format in Windows 2000/XP.

Text .REG files can be easily viewed/created/edited by hand using any text/ASCII editor, like Notepad

Their purpose is to add, modify or delete Registry (Sub)Keys and/or Values.

Writing .Reg Files

1.) Header line: this FIRST line is mandatory. MUST contain only these exact words (case sensitive = character capitalization required!):

REGEDIT4 = for Windows 95/98/ME and NT 4.0 or
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 = for Windows 2000/XP.
This is the only way Windows OS can recognize, validate and run a .REG file.

2.) Empty (blank) line: this second line is optional. Similar to inserting a carriage return (CR).

3.) Remarked (comment) line(s): optional. MUST begin with a semicolon (;) which may be followed by a space (optional). May be inserted anywhere in the .REG file, but NOT before the header, which MUST be present as FIRST line.

4.)(Sub)Key line: MUST be preceded and terminated by square parenthesis ([]). (Sub)Key name MUST start with the Hive Key name (left end) and MUST contain entire Subkey pathway leading to the current Subkey name (right end). Consecutive (Sub)Key names MUST be separated by SINGLE backslash marks (\).
(Sub)Key names not present in the Registry will be automatically created when the REG file is merged into the Registry. Exception: new Hive (Root) Keys can be created ONLY in Windows NT4/2000/XP, but NOT in Windows 95/98/ME.

5.) Value line: MUST contain these elements in this exact order:

Value name: MUST be preceded and terminated by quotation marks ("").
Equal mark (=): separates Value name from Value type.
Value type: MUST be specified (Dword [REG_DWORD], Binary [REG_BINARY], etc) if Value type other than String [REG_SZ].
Colon mark (:): MUST exist if Value type other than String.
Value data: MUST be in the same format as defined by Value type: text/ASCII, Unicode/ANSI, (alpha)numeric (decimal, hexadecimal or binary) etc. MUST be preceded and terminated by quotation marks ("") ONLY IF Value type is String.

Gmail's offline version is a surprisingly solid alternative to desktop mail clients. Despite the shortcomings of an initial release (attachments can't be added to messages composed offline, you can't customize which messages are downloaded, the contact manager is not available offline), there are many good things about the offline Gmail:

1. You can easily create proper shortcuts for Gmail from the settings page.

2. Now that's available offline, Gmail can truly become an application rendered by Chrome.

3. Some of the attachments are available offline and you can copy the files from Google Gears' cache.

4. Even if your Internet connection goes down, you can continue to read your messages and post replies, so you don't have to until the connection goes back up.

5. Gmail finally becomes usable if you have a slow or unreliable network connection. Enable the "flaky connection mode" and Gmail will cache your messages. "In flaky connection mode, you access the mail that's stored locally on your computer, regardless of your connection status. This makes it much faster to read and send mail, which is nice when you're on a slow or flaky connection. Your account will continue to sync in the background when it's able to do so, with no disruption to your experience."

6. Even if you have a fast Internet connection, it's faster to load data from your computer than from Google's servers, so the "flaky connection mode" is a good way to speed up Gmail.

7. Most Gmail features work even when you are offline, including themes, Gmail Labs and keyboard shortcuts.

8. You can cache messages for more than one account and switch between them.

9. The change of the online/offline status is seamless and you don't have to manually sync data.

Some Google Apps users noticed a new option in Google Calendar: read-only offline access to the calendars using Google Gears. Mark Mathson has screenshots for the new feature, but it's surprising to see that Google Apps users, who usually received the updates later than Google Accounts users, get the offline Calendar earlier.

Google's help page mentions that users can decide which calendars are available offline. "Calendar keeps you on time, even when you're not online. Offline Calendar allows you to access your events through your browser without requiring Internet access. It's perfect for flaky connections or for when you're in between meetings and have no idea where you're supposed to be next. Note that while offline, Calendar will be read-only - it will not be possible to create, edit, or delete events."

It's interesting that the version briefly available in October 2007 allowed you to "view and edit the next 3 months of your Google Calendar when you're not connected to the Internet". Google decided that it's important to synchronize all the events and that editing the events is too difficult to implement reliably.

Offline Google Calendar, Available for Everyone

After being tested in Google Apps, the offline version of Google Calendar is now available for all Google accounts. To enable it, you should click on "Offline (beta)" in Google Calendar's header, install Gears if you don't already have it, allow Google Gears to store information on your computer and then wait until the data is downloaded.

In the Offline Settings page, you can select the calendars that are available offline (by default, only the main calendar is enabled). "You'll be able to view events scheduled on these calendars the next time you access Calendar offline. Please note that calendars containing web-content events will not display correctly while offline," explains the help page.

Unlike the offline version for Gmail, the offline Google Calendar has many limitations: you need to manually go offline/online, you can't add events, edit the existing events, search your events or change the settings. Another limitation is that Google doesn't download all the events - I noticed a warning: "Your offline calendar only contains events from Feb 4, 2009 to Jun 4, 2009".

The read-only offline version of Google Calendar is only useful to quickly check your agenda when you don't have an Internet connection. For more features, you should check Mozilla Sunbird, a cross-platform tool that can synchronize with Google Calendar using CalDav. Make sure to enable caching if you want to view the events from Google Calendar when you are offline (you still can't edit the events or create new ones).

A. What is Google Docs offline?

Google Docs now allows you to view and edit your word processing documents offline, without an Internet connection. To do all of this, Google Docs uses Gears, an open source browser extension that adds offline functionality directly to the browser. Google Docs can be accessed offline by typing http://docs.google.com into your browser or by clicking on the desktop shortcut that is downloaded during the installation process.

Offline editing for presentations and spreadsheets is not available at this time.

B. How does it work?

Google Docs uses Gears, an open source browser extension that enables web applications to run offline. When you aren't connected to the Internet, Google Docs uses information stored on your computer's hard drive rather than relying on information sent across the network. When you are offline, your edits are stored on your own computer until you re-connect, at which point your changes are synced with Google Docs' servers and made available to collaborators.

C. Enabling Google Docs offline

To install or enable Gears for Google Docs, click on the Offline link in the upper right corner of your Docs list.
When you see the following dialogue box, click on the "Get Gears now" button.

You will then be asked to allow https://docs.google.com as a trusted site. Check the box next to "I trust this site. Allow it to use Gears." Then, click the Allow button.

Once you've enabled Gears for Google Docs, you will be able to edit your existing documents anywhere, even without an Internet connection.

To access Google Docs offline, just open a browser and type in http://docs.google.com or simply click on the Google Docs desktop shortcut, as shown below.

D. Syncing docs for the first time

The first time you sync your Docs after enabling offline access, there may be a short waiting period until all your docs get synced with the server. Once you see "Status: synchronized", you're set. If your Docs don't sync, please try once more. If the problem continues, please try manually refreshing your browser or uninstalling and reinstalling Gears.

E. Working offline

You can edit any of your existing word processing documents while offline. You can also view your spreadsheets. At this time, you cannot create new docs offline.
To share or publish your docs, just log back on to http://docs.google.com when you go back online.

F. How to tell when you're working offline

There are a couple ways to tell if you're working offline.

G. Saving changes while working offline

Just like when you're working online, your changes will automatically be saved while working offline. However, in order for these changes to be saved to the server, you'll need to log on to Google Docs with an Internet connection from the same browser and same computer you used offline. Your changes will automatically be saved to the server when a network connection is detected by Google Docs.

H. Security precautions while working offline

The Google Docs offline feature is meant for use only on your personal computer. To protect the privacy of your docs, please do not use the offline feature when working on a public or shared computer.
If you sign on to your Google Docs account on a public computer and get a message to enable Gears, you should not accept.

2. Gears

A. How do I install/uninstall Gears?

To install Gears, follow these steps:
Note: You need to be connected to the Internet to install Gears.

Sign in to an account with administrative rights.
Download Gears from the Gears homepage.
Open the downloaded file.
Restart your browser. Gears won't be usable until your browser has been restarted.

To uninstall Gears on Windows XP or Vista, follow these steps:

Open Add or Remove Programs (on XP) or Programs and Features (on Vista) from the Windows Control Panel.
In the window that opens, find Gears and select it.
Click the Remove button.

If you're running Mac OS X or Linux, you can uninstall from Firefox. To do so, follow these steps:

Find Gears and select it.
Click Uninstall.

Please note: Uninstalling will not clear any offline information you currently have on your system.

G. Connection issues

Below are several possible causes for the connection error you're receiving. Please determine which of these causes may be applicable to you and follow the instructions to resolve the problem.

Your firewall, anti-virus software, or proxy is preventing the program from accessing the Internet. In this case, you need to add it to your security software's exceptions list. If you're using Windows firewall, you can add this program by following these steps:
1. Click "Start" in your Windows Taskbar and choose "Control Panel" > "Windows Firewall."
2. Select the "Exceptions" tab.
3. Click the "Add Program" button.
4. Click "Browse" and select "My Computer" from the left side of the window.
5. Select "Local Disk (C:)" and click "Open."
6. Double-click "Program Files" > "Google" > "Common."
7. Select the folder with the highest number and open it.
8. Choose the file "googleupdate.exe."
If you're using other firewall software, please visit that program's website for specific instructions to add applications to the exceptions list.
You may not have the latest updates for Windows XP. If you're not currently running Windows XP Service Pack 2, please try upgrading Windows.
You’re on an authenticated proxy server that isn't supported. Currently, we support the Negotiate authentication scheme. This includes both Kerberos and NTLM, depending on what is available. Additionally, proxies using "integrated authentication" are supported, provided that the current user is authorized to go through that proxy. Please determine if you're on a supported proxy server.
Your computer's Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) isn't starting properly. If this is the case, you may want to verify that BITS is correctly configured. To ensure that BITS is enabled, please follow these steps:
1. Click the "Start" button in your Windows taskbar and select "Settings" > "Control Panel" > "Administrative Tools" > "Services."
2. Select "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" from the list.
3. Right-click “Background Intelligent Transfer Service” and choose "Properties" from the menu.
4. From the "General" tab verify that the "Startup" type is set to either "Automatic" or "Manual." Make sure this setting is not "Disabled."
If you continue to have difficulties with BITS, make sure you have write access to the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\
To determine if you have write access, right-click the folder and choose "Properties." If you see an empty box next to "Read-only" in the "General tab," you do have write access. If you see a checkmark or a green box, click the box until it's empty and click "OK." If you're unable to click the box, please speak with your system administrator.

3. Troubleshooting

A. Persistent error messages while offline

If you're getting a persistent error message while working offline, make sure you do the following:

Keep your browser window open until you can go back online. Once you're back online, Google Docs will start syncing and saving your changes.

If Google Docs does not sync once online, copy the content of your document to a text file in order to make sure you've backed up your work.

If you've already closed your browser, it's possible some content has been lost. However, go back online making sure to access your documents from the same browser and thesame computerthat you used to edit them while offline. You'll want to be sure to check for your changes under revisions.

B. Offline changes not visible online

If you're accessing the document online, and the changes you made while offline still aren't showing up, make sure you visit Google Docs with an active Internet connection from the same browser and computer you used offline. This will allow your changes to be synchronized to the server.

If, after this, you still don't have access to your changes, you may need to reset your offline access. To do this, remove docs.google.com as an approved domain in Gears, add it back and then start the activation process again. Note that this will discard any offline changes you made previously that were not synchronized to the server. However, it could prevent any further problems if syncing between your online and offline versions simply isn't working.

C. Adding and removing Google Docs as an approved domain

To remove Google Docs as an approved domain, please follow these steps:

From your browser's menus, go to Tools > Gears Settings.
Click the Remove link next to docs.google.com
Click the Save button to save your changes.
Restart your browser. Gears won't be usable until your browser has been restarted.

To add Google Docs as an approved domain, follow these steps:

From the Docs list, click the Offlinelink.
In the dialog that appears, click, Enable offline access.
In the next window, check the box next to I trust this site. Allow it to use Gears and click Allow. This will re-enable docs.google.com as an approved domain in Gears.

D. Working with collaborators offline

Your collaborators and viewers will not be able to see any of your edits made offline until you're back online and Google Docs has synchronized with the server. To access a document you edited offline, and sync changes you've made, just open Google Docs in the same browser on the same computerthat you used when working offline. In your Docs list, you'll notice that "Edited offline" appears next to those documents.

E. Desktop shortcut

If you don't have a desktop shortcut to Google Docs and would like one, click on the green status indicator icon (it looks like a checkmark) and then the "Settings" link. Select the "Create desktop shortcut" button.
